The NFL Combine is set to take place in a few weeks as college football players get ready for the draft. The league sent out invites to prospects this week.

Colorado star Travis Hunter was amongst those invitees as he’s expected to be one of the first names called in the selection process. He was assigned a position group in which to compete despite his proven ability to play at multiple spots.

As a junior, Hunter excelled as both a pass catcher and a defender. He led the Big 12 in receptions. He also paced the Buffaloes‘ defense with four interceptions.

Hunter was named conference Player of the Year. He was also recognized as the top wideout in all of college football. That versatility helped him win the Heisman trophy. He’s remained adamant on his plan to play both receiver and cornerback as a pro.

Despite his insane production on both offense and defense, former NFL players are doubtful of his ability to play both positions full-time. Richard Sherman was one of those critics, saying Hunter will be an immediate liability if he tries to do so.

“We’re not playing 50 snaps on offense and 55 snaps on defense [in the NFL],” he said. “These QBs are going to say, ‘Hey, let’s see how in shape you are by the end of the fourth quarter. We just saw you run three go routes, I’m about to bring our third receiver in to run you on three more go routes.”

Sherman, alongside many others, believe NFL teams will target Travis Hunter the more he’s on the field. To be successful, they say he needs to choose one side over the other.

Most think his future lies on the defensive side of the ball. The league seems to agree. Accompanied with the invites were position assignment for NFL Combine participants.

Hunter is listed as a defensive back. He’ll line up alongside fellow secondary members as he runs drills in Indianapolis. That’s not to say he won’t be able to showcase his skills as a wide receiver, too. Still, it may give insight as to where he’ll line up most often at the next level.

Hunter logged more than 700 snaps on each side of the ball last season in Boulder. He plans to make an impact on offense and defense as a pro. Still, he may need to prioritize one position over the other. For now, it seems cornerback will be the first choice.
