Pittsburgh fans’ unhappiness with ownership of the Pirates is nothing new. Cries for Bob Nutting to sell the team have been both loud and frequent over the course of the last few years.
Some don’t believe a true emphasis has been placed on winning. Instead, fans believe the bottom line is what matters most.
The Pirates often boast one of the lowest payrolls in baseball. It’s been a running theme for much of Nutting’s tenure. Too often, top players are traded for future talent when it comes time to re-up contracts. It’s created a revolving door of incoming and outgoing star power.
As a result of that roster outlook, wins have been hard to come by. Nutting has been the principal owner and chairman of the board since 2007. Pittsburgh has posted losing records in 14 of his 18 seasons leading the charge. They appear destined for a 15th amid this year’s 28-41 start.
One Pirates supporter attending the US Open at Oakmont Country Club decided to voice his displeasure during the opening round. After a Collin Morikawa tee shot, hot mics caught the rogue fan screaming for Bob Nutting to sell.

Those listening along with the broadcast on Peacock heard the very loud request extremely clearly.
Oakmont is located just outside of the city of Pittsburgh. There could be a number of Pirates fans in attendance throughout the weekend.
This fan is far from the first to speak his mind on the situation. In the past, Bob Nutting’s been trolled in photo ops, seen fan fest events devolve into “Sell the Team” riots, and experienced an overall feeling of annoyance from the fanbase.

He got another dose of the vitriol on Thursday afternoon. We’ll see if any other US Open goers follow suit throughout the remainder of the weekend.
