The Vanderbilt Commodores are planning to celebrate the anniversary of a notable win in program history this weekend when they host Kentucky. Just 15 years ago, the team won the Music City Bowl.

While the victory capped one of the more successful seasons in recent memory for the Commodores, many have been quick to troll on social media.

Vanderbilt has been playing college football for 120 seasons. While they were somewhat dominant in the early years, they’ve been a conference doormat for the majority of their time in the SEC.

It’s just not a football school. They have a hard time even storming the field correctly after huge upset wins.

The Commodores have never won 10 games in a season, have never started a season ranked in the AP Poll, and have played in just nine bowls games.

One of those postseason matchups came back in 2008, a Music City championship over Boston College.

In that contest, the Commodores kicked a go-ahead field goal with under four minutes remaining to pull out the 16-14 win. Vandy ended the year at 7-6, one of just three winning seasons they’ve seen over the last four decades.

When the Commodores host Kentucky on Saturday, they’ll honor that team and the Music City Bowl victory.

College football fans have not been kind to the announcement online.

“Such a Vandy thing to do,” one follower said.

“This is so sad,” wrote another.

“Vanderbilt’s national championship,” this fan commented of the Music City Bowl celebration.

“Am I reading this right?” someone else asked.

Vanderbilt is a hard school to win at given the academic requirements. Look no further than their recent history. The program has won three game or less in four of the last five years, including a winless 2020 season.

Making things worse, they play in the nation’s strongest football conference. They’ve got to celebrate any and all success, no matter how small.

The Commodores will look for an SEC win this weekend against the Wildcats.
