Villanova QB Pat McQuaide's playing status is in doubt.
The Villanova football team kicks off its 2026 season in less than 10 days. The Wildcats are still unsure of who will be their starting quarterback.
Transfer passer Pat McQuaide was tabbed to lead the team after winning an offseason eligibility battle. He has now been banned by the Patriot League.
McQuaide was ruled eligible to play earlier this month by an Ohio judge. The conference now threatens to punish the Wildcats if he competes.

Villanova must name a new starting quarterback before its season opener against William & Mary in 10 days. Robert Russo and freshman Nolan DiLucia are the two favorites.

McQuaide transferred to Villanova after stints at Kent State, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, and Nicholls State.
With the Golden Flashes, he redshirted as a walk-on. He then led the NJCAA in passing at Mississippi Gulf Coast. In 2024, he threw for 2,218 yards at Nicholls before signing with the Wildcats.
Last season, he tossed 25 touchdowns as Villanova’s starter while racking up 3,123 passing yards. The team won 12 games on a run to the FCS playoff semifinals.
McQuaide’s eligibility has been a concern. Last year was expected to be his last. Things have since changed. Though he is not listed on the 2026 roster, he has been practicing with the team while pushing for one final season.
The quarterback was granted a preliminary injunction to play in early August. The Patriot League is disregarding that ruling.
In its reasoning, the Patriot League cited the original NCAA ruling which had been overruled by the Ohio court. The letter to Villanova from Patriot League Senior Associate Commissioner for Policy and Compliance Lynn Hughes states that the quarterback “has utilized four seasons of competition within five years since initial collegiate enrollment.”
McQuaide’s attorney provided an update on the ban. He says that the Patriot League has informed the school that it will be forced to forfeit conference games in which the passer competes.
McQuaide argues that the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted his recruitment and development as a high school senior, leading to the walk-on opportunity at Kent State. There are also questions surrounding his JUCO season.
In 2024, Diego Pavia sued the NCAA successfully to have his time in junior college scrubbed from his eligibility clock. As a result, he earned an extra year at Vanderbilt. The Wildcats contend that McQuaide’s situation should be judged in a similar fashion.
Villanova, which submitted the waiver request to the NCAA on behalf of McQuaide, argued that the COVID-19 pandemic directly led to McQuaide’s single season at Mississippi Gulf Coast. The school described the year as a “necessary bridge rather than a choice to ‘use’ an additional season.”

The Wildcats are scrambling.
Villanova has been holding a roster spot open amid Pat McQuaide’s legal battle. A preliminary injunction seemingly provided a path to playing time after his initial waiver was denied by the NCAA.
Now, the Patriot League threatens his status as the Wildcats’ starter.
That provides major issues for the offense moving forward. No other quarterback on the roster has completed a college pass.

One of those inexperienced passers will start the season under center should McQuaide’s ban stand.
Villanova is ranked No. 7 in the preseason Top 25 and is the favorite to win the Patriot League, which the Wildcats transitioned to this summer from the Coastal Athletic Association (formerly the Colonial Athletic Association).
The program is getting off to a rocky start with its new conference. Villanova football will make its Patriot League debut on August 28 against William & Mary.
The Wildcats plan to fight the decision to secure McQuaide’s eligibility.
