Atop the Washington Commanders’ to-do list this offseason is addressing the quarterback position. Taylor Heinicke showed flashes under center last season, but handing the keys over to him without any sort of competition this offseason would be foolish.

The Commanders are in a great spot entering the offseason when it comes to their cap space with over $30 million already freed up. That number could even reach the $50 million mark depending on what they elect to do with some veterans on their roster.

Given their cap space, Washington can certainly go after Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers. The Commanders have been linked to them all offseason, with Wilson being the likelier of the two that could possibly land in D.C., but that still seems like a bit of a stretch.

ESPN reporter Bill Barnwell has a suggestion for the Commanders if they can’t connect on that home run signing for a QB. He believes Andy Dalton may be a fit in Washington.

Andy Dalton To The Commanders?

While Barnwell does note that Jimmy Garoppolo could be a viable option as well if (when) the 49ers decide to trade him, Dalton does have ties within the Washington organization that could make the fit make sense.

“One veteran who comes to mind is Andy Dalton, who worked under Washington quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese in Cincinnati. Rivera could also choose to use the No. 11 pick in the draft on a quarterback, but considering the relative low marks given this class, an immediate starter such as Garoppolo or Dalton seems like a more plausible path for Washington,” Barnwell writes.

It’s safe to say that a QB competition between Heinicke and Dalton wouldn’t exactly have Washington fans too excited entering the first season as Commanders.

If Dalton does land in Washington, it would be his fourth team in as many years. He played in eight games for the Bears a season ago throwing eight touchdowns and nine interceptions with a QB rating of 33.6.
