Visiting a steakhouse offers endless cuts and serving sizes. Customers can select the ones that appeal to their taste buds and enjoy them at their own pace.
How about devouring an entire whopping 72-ounce steak within an hour? TikTok creator Nicci (@necrobiotics) learned about this Sayler’s Old Country Kitchen challenge during a recent trip there. After making this discovery, she unveiled it online for all to see.
What’s The 72-Ounce Steak Challenge?
In a five-second clip, she focuses on the menu at the steakhouse, which is reportedly the size of the challenge’s steak.
“This steak restaurant gives you a free 72 oz steak if you eat it all in an hour,” she shares in the text overlay. “The menu is the size of the steak so you can see how big it is.”
Then the content creator asks her 2.1 million viewers, “Could you do it?”
Nicci told BroBible she’s dined at Sayler’s since she was a baby and that eating there is a family tradition. She says she discovered this famous challenge when reading the menu.
“They advertise it in the menu and after doing some reading, I saw that the menu was the same size as the challenge that they were offering,” she said via Instagram direct message. “I thought it was super interesting and wanted to see what TikTok would think.”
Needless to say, she was flabbergasted.
“I was so enamored!! I was shocked that they would be giving away such an expensive piece of meat for free!!” she said. “That steak is about the size of three of my hands.”
Though the content creator believed she wouldn’t be able to compete, she encouraged viewers to partake if they desire.
“I feel like what everyone in the TikTok comment section is failing to realize is that the thickness of the steak is huge and not only is it the size of three of my hands the thickness is probably like 3 inches!” Nicci said. “But I would really love to see people go there and support the business and try and complete the challenge. I even said that if anybody goes and completes it, I will send them $20 on top of the free steak that they received!”
Are Viewers Up For It?
In the comments section, many were confident they could demolish this hunk of meat within the allotted time–with a few stipulations.
“Give me a diet pepsi and 20 minutes max,” one viewer commented.
“On my period definitely,” another stated.
“I’m pregnant and have only been wanting steak. give me the one with the MOST fat, medium rare, with a bottle of A1, and a root beer,” a third said.
“I’m not even kidding I genuinely could on a normal day just give me some water and grilled onions,” a fourth answered.
On the other hand, some knew their limitations.
“I know i could but id lose on the simple fact that I REFUSE to eat any part that is slimy or has fat on it,” a commenter remarked.
“My ego says yes, but i can barely even eat a 6oz steak,” a second wrote.
How Did This Steak Challenge Come About?
Although Nicci only recently found out about this challenge, the tradition has been around for decades. This challenge has been a popular feature for carnivores since the Portland establishment opened its doors in 1948. While chowing down on this may sound simple to some, there’s much more than what people realize, and it’s not for the weak-stomached. In addition to polishing off this colossal steak topped with onion rings solo, competitors must tackle multiple side dishes, according to the website.
Winners earn a free meal, a T-shirt, bragging rights, and a spot in their Hall of Fame.
Have There Been Victors?
Indeed, there have been winners of the challenge. Although thousands of people travel far to this hot-spot destination, only 714 have succeeded. The most recent winner was in 2014, when Nebraska-based competitive eater Molly Schuyler was crowned champion after polishing off her food in 57 minutes. To top it off, she demolished her steak in 2 minutes and 44 seconds, according to TODAY. She still remains the restaurant’s reigning champion.
So, if you’re up for the challenge, be sure to call and schedule it ahead of time. Don’t forget to bring a hearty appetite.
