Of the many headlines Britney Spears has made in recent weeks with the release of her memoir The Woman in Me, one of the most interesting is the video of her audition for The Notebook being released.

Famously starring Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling, casting director Matthew Barry told the Daily Mail that Spears went up against the likes of McAdams, Scarlett Johansson, Amy Adams, Claire Danes, and Jessica Biel, for the highly-coveted part.

Despite, obviously, not ultimately landing the role, Barry was full of praise for Spears anyway, who was 21 years old at the time of her audition in 2002.

“Britney wasn’t just good – she was phenomenal. It was a tough decision. Britney blew us all away. Our jaws were on the floor. I was blown away. Absolutely blown away. She brought her A-game that day,” Barry said.

While Spears did ultimately appear in a few films — Longshot (2001), Crossroads (2002), Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002), and Pauly Shore Is Dead (2003) — her acting career never took off the way her musical work did.

As mentioned above, Spears’ memoir — which was officially released on Tuesday, October 24, and features an audiobook read by five-time Academy Award nominee Michelle Williams — has been responsible for tons of bombshells in recent weeks, such as the revelation that she apparently was pregnant with Justin Timberlake’s baby and had it aborted.

Her memoir also sees the now 41-year-old dish out further info about her controlling parents, detail how she was locked up for months and forced to take lithium, and why she’s always posting racy content on Instagram.

McAdams’ audition tape, which you can watch below. has also been circulating the internet for some time now. In addition to Gosling and McAdams, The Notebook — one of the iconic romantic films of its generation — also starred James Garner, Gena Rowlands, James Marsden, Kevin Connolly, Sam Shepard, and Joan Allen.
