Black bear next to snarling cat
On paper, there aren’t many animals that can go toe-to-toe with a bear and have the upper hand. However, no one told that to a cat that didn’t hesitate to go after one that made its way into a backyard in Canada.
Tracking active bear populations is not an easy task, but there’s plenty of evidence that suggests Canada boasts one of the highest populations (if not the highest) on the planet.
It’s believed the country is home to the majority of the upwards of 600,000 black bears that roam North America with nearly 400,000, which are supplemented by approximately 25,000 brown (a.k.a grizzly) bears as well as around 15,000 polar bears that roam its northern regions.
None of its provinces have a higher population of bears of the black variety than British Columbia (between 120,000 and 160,000), and while they usually don’t go out of their way to bother people, they are also not afraid to invade populated areas in search of a meal.
That included one that recently made its way into the backyard of a home in the middle of B.C., but it didn’t stay there for long after attracting the attention of a cat that was not a fan of its presence.
A black bear was no match for a tiny cat that chased it out of a backyard in British Columbia
Quesnel is a relatively tiny town in the heart of British Columbia with a population of just over 20,000 people, and bear sightings aren’t particularly uncommon in the area. Black bears are the most common culprits, although a grizzly caused a bit of a stir when it was spotted near downtown in 2023.
According to CTV, Quesnel was also the site of a video that was recently filmed by someone who pulled out their phone after spotting a black bear in a backyard, and they captured the moment it was forced to beat a hasty retreat over a wooden fence courtesy of a tuxedo cat that didn’t think twice about charging at the significantly larger creature.

This isn’t the first time a tiny house pet in British Columbia has bested a bear that invaded its territory, as a six-pound Pomeranian dispatched one that invaded a house outside of Vancouver last summer.
