Dane Cook is releasing a documentary about his brother stealing $12M from him
Dane Cook’s brother infamously stole $12 million from him and hid the cash inside pasta sauce jars. The story is now getting the documentary treatment.
A documentary about Dane Cook’s brother stealing $12 million from him, titled Funny Money: The Dane Cook Story, will be released on demand September 29.
Cook, formerly one of the biggest stand-up comedy acts in the world, dropped the trailer for the project this week.
Cook’s half-brother Darryl McCauley served as his business manager during the height of his fame in the mid-2000s, when Cook was one of the most commercially successful stand-up comedians in the country — selling out arenas and moving millions of comedy album copies.

Between 2004 and 2008, McCauley systematically stole at least $12 million from Cook, hiding bricks of cash wrapped in plastic inside pasta sauce jars. He pleaded guilty to larceny and related charges, repaid the $12 million, and was sentenced to six years in prison.
After his release, McCauley disappeared, and his current whereabouts are unknown. Cook, who has maintained a relatively low profile in recent years, is the primary narrator of the film.
At his peak in 2005-2006, Cook was arguably the most commercially successful stand-up comedian alive, as his album Retaliation became the best-selling comedy album in decades and he sold out Madison Square Garden multiple times.
His mainstream career began to unravel, however, when critics and fellow comedians accused him of stealing jokes — most notably from Louis C.K., who at the time was a beloved figure in the comedy world before his own downfall.
