In most parts of Alaska, the chance of encountering wild bears on any given day is a very real reality. For this group of 4 good dogs, it was a potentially lethal situation that turned out well in the end.

A video posted by the Kenai River Co. Instagram account, ran by owner Mike Evans, has gone viral. Pete Thomas of For The Win shared the viral video and spoke with Evans who told him the Alaskan brown bear “was a repeat visitor and that on this day it was attempting to crash a barbecue.”

The top comment reads “That dog going toe too toe with the bear needs a steak , he’s a champ.” Someone else joked “HAUNTS, PONCE, AUNTS, DOAWGZ can’t really tell what the word being screamed is but those are my best guesses.”

None of the 4 dogs were injured despite it appearing as if the Alaskan brown bear was able to severely harm them at any moment should it have chosen to. Also, as reflected in the Instagram comments, it appears as if the bear was injured. They suspect it was a previous injury from a run in with another bear or potentially a snare.

The dogs from Harpestead Mountain Kennels are no strangers to bears. There is strength in numbers. Here is a video from last month where the group of dogs from Harpestead Mountain Kennels scared a bear off by making as much noise as a pack of dogs possibly can:

And just last week, they shared this video showing “lots of bear activity on the river this year!” while fishermen can be seen in the background:

As far as American geography goes, I’m about as far from Alaska as possible. Down here in Southwest Florida, the risk of bear encounters isn’t particularly high. That said, this family of black bears were filmed south of here last week:

It’s always best to keep your head on a swivel whenever there’s a chance of bears in the area. And as evidenced above, having dogs around to make a racket at the slightest twig snapping in the woods can be very helpful.
