Once again, someone deeply involved in the debacle that was the 2017 Fyre Festival is back in the news. And also once again, they aren’t in the news because they are being punished for their involvement in the absolute sh*tshow.

Last week, we reported on how Billy McFarland’s wingman in organizing (disorganizing?) the Fyre Festival Ja Rule is officially off the hook after a court ruled he can’t be held liable for the scam.

This week, another key participant in the fraud that was the Fyre Festival, Jerry Media, aka @fuckjerry, the company behind the false advertising and promotional materials for the festival, not only did not get punished, they just received four Emmy nominations.

The nominations are for the company’s role in the production of the Netflix documentary FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened.

According to Quartz

The company was almost entirely responsible for the fraudulent social media campaign that launched the event, which involved hiring supermodels and influencers to star in the festival’s notorious promo video, and then paying the subjects and the agencies that represent them tens of thousands of dollars to post about it on Instagram. The influencers in the video (including Bella Hadid, Hailey Baldwin, Kendall Jenner, and over a dozen more) were subpoenaed for their involvement, and were suspected of running afoul of Federal Trade Commission guidelines by failing to disclose that they were being paid to advertise the festival, which, per the FTC, is considered illegal advertising.

That said, The Fashion Law reports that there’s a possibility Jerry Media itself will be next, given that it orchestrated the disclosure-less social media campaign in the first place, and that the social promotion was what led to nearly 5,000 people paying between $1,500 and $250,000 for tickets to an event that was nowhere near to what was advertised.

Also this week, Netflix reportedly reached a settlement to end a copyright dispute that was filed against them and Jerry Media over some footage that appeared in FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened.

DigitalMusicNews.com reports, “Clarissa Cardenas — who filmed the footage — sued Netflix and producer Jerry Media in February. Cardenas alleged the documentary used her Fyre Festival footage without seeking any permission. A settlement appears to have been reached last month and yesterday, Cardenas voluntarily withdrew the lawsuit. Court papers on the withdrawal did not offer any details of the agreement.”

Fyre Festival organizer Billy McFarland is currently serving six years in prison after being found guilty of several counts of fraud, including three counts of wire fraud, one count of bank fraud, and one count of lying to investigators.
