Henry Cavill Says Intimate Scenes Are ‘Overused’ — Less Than 2% Of Movies Apparently Have Them

Henry Cavill isn’t a fan of intimate scenes in movies, despite the fact that there are fewer than ever these days.

During a recent interview, the former Man of Steel and current Argylle star shared his feelings about intimate scenes in movies and frankly said that he’s “not a fan” because he finds them to be “overused cop-outs.”

“I don’t understand them – I’m not a fan. There are circumstances where a sex scene actually is beneficial to a movie, rather than just the audience, but I think sometimes they’re overused these days,” Cavill said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

“It’s when you have a sense where you’re going, ‘Is this really necessary or is it just people with less clothing on?’ And that’s when you start to get more uncomfortable and you’re thinking, ‘There’s not a performance here. There’s not a piece which is going to carry through to the rest of the movie’.”

“It can be a little bit of a cop-out if a TV show or a movie is just filled with gyrating bodies and you’re going, ‘Okay, but what is this doing for us apart from the idea of, “Oh naked person, great.”‘”

Cavill’s comments about intimate scenes in movies being “overused” are a bit strange considering that, according to New York Magazine and RogerEbert.com film critic Matt Seitz, “less than 2% of English language movies released in North America each year have them, and the ones that do exist tend to be very short.”

This isn’t the first time that Cavill has made comments regarding sexuality that have raised some eyebrows, as he created a bit of controversy back in 2018 with his comments about the Me Too movement, saying in an interview with GQ Australia:

“There’s something wonderful about a man chasing a woman … I think a woman should be wooed and chased, but maybe I’m old-fashioned for thinking that,” Cavill said. “It’s very difficult to do that if there are certain rules in place. Because then it’s like: ‘Well, I don’t want to go up and talk to her, because I’m going to be called a rapist or something.’”

Following Argylle, Cavill will next be seen starring in Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare alongside Alan Ritchson, Eiza Gonzalez, Henry Golding, Cary Elwes, and more.

Vaughn also sat down for an extensive chat with BroBible’s Post Credit Podcast — where we discuss working without CGI, scaring the crap out of Kevin Bacon on X-Men: First ClassDeadpool 3 saving the MCU, having potential interest in directing Supergirl, drinking Guinness with Brad Pitt, and more — which you can check out below.
