The New ‘Mission: Impossible’ Made President Joe Biden More Frightened Of AI

Whether you voted for President Joe Biden or not, it turns out that there is one aspect of him that’s similar to you: he, too, is a Mission: Impossible fan.

On Monday, Biden signed a new executive order to provide safeguards around the development of artificial intelligence, requiring the industry to, as per Time Magazine, “develop safety and security standards, introducing new consumer protections and giving federal agencies an extensive to-do list to oversee the rapidly progressing technology.”

Furthermore, using the Defense Production Act, the executive order now forces AI developers to share the results of their safety tests and any other pertinent information with the government.

As it turns out, however, Biden’s proactiveness regarding artificial intelligence may have been, at least partially, spurred on by the presence of the villain in this summer’s ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’, an AI program known as The Entity, which opens the movie displaying its ability to sink a submarine.

The issue of AI was seemingly inescapable for Biden. At Camp David one weekend, he relaxed by watching the Tom Cruise film Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One. The film’s villain is a sentient and rogue AI known as “the Entity” that sinks a submarine and kills its crew in the movie’s opening minutes.

“If he hadn’t already been concerned about what could go wrong with AI before that movie, he saw plenty more to worry about,” said Reed, who watched the film with the president. [via Time Magazine]

Funnily enough, the story about President Biden watching Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One came out on the same day that the film was made available to purchase on digital, 4K, and Blu-ray.

In addition to Tom Cruise, the film stars Rebecca Ferguson, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Hayley Atwell, Shea Whigham, Pom Klementieff, Esai Morales, Rob Delaney, Henry Czerny, and Cary Elwes.
