Academy Award winner Leonardo DiCaprio seems to be committing the next few years of his career to working with his longtime collaborator Martin Scorsese. The iconic Hollywood duo have now worked together on six feature films: Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Killers of the Flower Moon.
Earlier this week, it was reported that the next film from Whiplash and La La Land director Damien Chazelle would be a prison-set movie with Cillian Murphy and Daniel Craig attached to star.
The reports note that Chazelle was previously circling an Evel Knievel biopic with Leonardo DiCaprio, but a deal was unable to be struck, leading to speculation that Leo is keeping his schedule clear for a bevy of Martin Scorsese projects.
“While unconfirmed, insiders say the film will be set in a prison. If deals end up closing for the two stars, production is expected to start later this year. Chazelle had been weighing several projects in recent months including an Evel Knievel pic with Leonardo DiCaprio circling the lead role. With the studio unable to make a deal for DiCaprio, Chazelle circled back to the prison drama as his next film.” [via Deadline]
Scorsese has multiple projects currently in the hopper, virtually all of which DiCaprio has been attached to. A few years back, reports indicated they were developing an adaptation of The Wager from Killers of the Flower Moon author David Grann, although that one appears to have been sidelined.
Earlier this year, it was reported that, after previously abandoning the project following a decade of it stuck in developmental hell, the duo revived their interest on adapting The Devil in the White City, which was written by Erik Larson.
It’s also been reported that they’re developing a Frank Sinatra biopic, and a crime epic in the vein of The Departed, which will be set in Hawaii and also co-stars The Rock and Emily Blunt. The Rock has publicly addressed this project which perhaps suggests its the closest to coming to fruition.
Next up for DiCaprio will be One Battle After Another, which releases on September 26 and marks his first time working with acclaimed Boogie Nights and There Will Be Blood director Paul Thomas Anderson.
