Lockpicking Expert Makes Apple’s $330 ‘Smart’ Door Knob Look Stupid In Matter Of Seconds

Lockpicking Expert Cracks $330 Apple 'Smart' Door Knob In Seconds

Lockpicking Lawyer

One of the most intriguing aspects of YouTube is that you never know when you’ll find yourself tumbling down a rabbit hole that leads to you developing a rabid obsession with a seemingly mundane topic or hobby you suddenly can’t get enough of.

For example, I never would’ve guessed I’d devote hours of my life to watching a faceless attorney discuss the surprisingly fascinating intricacies of picking locks until I was introduced to the man known as “The Lockpicking Lawyer,” who’s racked up over 4 million subscribers on YouTube thanks to videos that routinely end up on the front page of Reddit.

The Lockpicking Lawyer has routinely made quick work of the various door knobs, padlocks, and other devices people rely on to keep their homes and possessions secure. He also routinely fields requests from his viewers and subscribers—including some who recently asked him to take a stab at the “Level Lock,” a door knob sold by Apple as part of its “Smart Home” suite that will set you back a cool $329.95.

You’d think a door knob that costs the same amount as a last-generation iPad currently listed on the Apple Store would pose a bit of a challenge—but as you’ll see, that is decidedly not the case.

It took a lockpicking expert seconds to crack Apple’s expensive Smart Home door knob

The description for the Level Lock promises you’ll “get all-new ways for everyone to access your home,” as it can be unlocked electronically with an iPhone and Apple Watch or with a traditional set of keys.

Unfortunately, that second option appears to be its Achilles’ heel, as it also offers anyone with the most rudimentary lockpicking knowledge the ability to defeat the interior mechanism with nothing but a bit of brute force.

The Lockpicking Lawyer used both the traditional (and incredibly straightforward) “raking” technique to get the lock to turn in less than five seconds, and made similarly quick work of the so-called “smart” lock with the “bumping” approach that required the use of a standard house key, a tiny donut, and a hammer.

As a result, it seems like that’s $329.95 thats’ definitely best spent elsewhere.
