No one in Hollywood embodies what it means to be a true Bro quite like Matthew McConaughey. Today, November 3rd, marks the Bro legend’s 50th birthday.
A real-life Most Interesting Man In The World, McConaughey’s body of work, as an Oscar-winning actor and a human being, keeps getting more fascinating by the day: He was recently appointed “Professor of Life” at The University of Texas, where he’s frequently spotted on the sidelines of Longhorns football games cheering on the team. He’s rumored to be considering a role as iconic supervillain Harvey Dent in an upcoming Batman movie with Warner Brothers. He chats about smoking weed with Snoop and is poised to star in Guy Ritchie’s next feature, The Gentleman.
His canon includes some of the most beloved performances in recent history, from his Jimmy Buffett-eats-acid-with-Hunter S. Thompson character Moondog in Beach Bum to the bleak crime noir existentialism of Rust Cohle in season 1 of True Detective. Even his commercials, with Lincoln Automobiles and Wild Turkey Whiskey, are poetic in themselves. There’s at least a dozen other assorted flavors of McConaughey that we all know and love, from From Lincoln Lawyer to Interstellar to, hell, Magic Mike. Heck, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days-era McConaughey has aged rather gracefully compared to other rom-coms of the era, alright alright alright.
For his 50th birthday, Matthew McConaughey’s opened a new chapter by starting an Instagram account, aptly named @officiallymcconaughey.
In a rambling, freewheeling welcome video, McConaughey opines in a very McConaughey way before a robust burst of McConaughey laughter:
“When people come to make, I want them to see me. Look, this is my first venture about sharing myself and my views with the world. And I’m a little nervous about it. Um, because quite frankly, I know want to have the monologue but I’m not sure I want to have the dialogue.”
McConaughey continues on Instagram:
“But I’ve learned that you have to have the monologue to have dialogue, just as you have to have the dialogue to have the monologue, so I’m looking forward to it.
I’m looking forward to sharing who I am with you. I’m looking forward to seeing if who I am translates. If it tickles your funny bone. If it makes you think for a second. If it makes your heart swell up. If it makes you take a quiet moment and go for a walk and check with the M and the E.
Hopefully all of those things. Let’s have some fun with it. Let’s keep the high high – not the low high. The high high.”
I can’t think of a better way for the legend himself to join Instagram. Welcome, McConaughey! You’re a true saavant at livin’ life.
Happy Birthday from the whole BroBible crew.
Just keep livin’.
