McDonald’s Is Depriving Americans Of The Chocolate McGriddles We Never Knew We Needed Until Now

In 2003, McDonald’s turned the breakfast game on its head when it rolled out a new line of sandwiches dubbed “McGriddles.” The fast food giant has rolled out a new twist by incorporating chocolate in the mix, but Americans are being deprived of the chance to taste the limited-edition offering that’s only available in one region.

Taste may be subjective, but I would argue McDonald’s is objectively the king of the fast food breakfast game.

The chain started serving up The Most Important Meal of the Day across the United States in 1977, and it has slowly but surely expanded a menu that initially boasted its flagship offering, the McMuffin, as well as its iconic hash browns and the platter that consisted of pancakes, scrambled eggs, and a sausage patty.

We were treated to one of its most innovative offerings in 2003 when the McGriddle was unleashed upon an unsuspecting world that was treated to a breakfast sandwich featuring two pancake-inspired buns infused with syrup. It was a hit from the start, and it remains a staple of the menu close to 25 years after it was introduced.

The chain has subscribed to the”If It Ain’t Broke, Don’t Fix It” mentality when it comes to the McGriddle, although it’s very hard not to be intrigued by a chocolate version that we can only hope will make its way to the United States.

McDonald’s restaurants in Hong Kong are selling chocolate McGriddles for a limited time

McDonald’s is one of the many fast food chains with locations around the globe that only offer certain items in some countries. In some cases, they’re designed to cater to local tastes, but there are others that seem tailor-made for Americans that are somehow not available  in the U.S. (like the hot dog stuffed crust concoction Pizza Hut started selling in Canada earlier this year).

If you visit a McDonald’s in Hong Kong, you’ll also encounter some items you won’t find in the country where Mickey D’s was founded, including buckets of fried chicken, a Ham ‘N Cheese Burger, and bowls of corn and pasta.

That list now includes the chocolate McGriddles that popped up at those restaurants this week, as people who visit one for breakfast between July 1st and July 3rd will have the chance to experience the “patties” where the syrup has seemingly been swapped out for cocoa.

There doesn’t appear to be any plans to bring them stateside, but a man can still dream.
