A New Zealand man was awarded the coveted ‘Caller of the Week’ title by Fletch, Vaughan & Hayley on ZM (FVHZM) for his story about how he was presumed dead for six months after his vengeful sisters told their parents he had passed away.

The story has since gone viral and it is worth listening to in its entirety but I’ve typed out a large portion of it below. It was told to Fletch, Vaughan, and Hayley who are considered ‘radio royalty’ down in New Zealand.

It starts with the man named Callum calling into the radio show and saying “Yes, I have definitely been presumed dead, mate…” He then dives into the story, telling the radio hosts “So my parents thought I was dead for about 6 months.”

At this point, everyone has questions. First and foremost, how exactly does a New Zealand man just get presumed dead by his parents for 6 long months?

Well, Callum went on to say “So my sisters were in a bit of a tiff with my parents at the time and they weren’t really getting along and I was living in Wellington while they were in Christchurch. And my older sister actually called my parents up and told them that I had died.” He adds “My sisters and stuff told them that they’d already had the funeral and that my ex-girlfriend’s parents didn’t want them there.”

The real question on everyone’s minds is how the parents continued to believe their son was dead for 6 months. They asked if he just never called home or how there was no contact for the six months he was presumed dead by his family.

Callum continued, saying “I was just busy with life and work and then I was like wait, I haven’t heard from my parents for a while and (wondered) what’s going on. (So) I gave them a call up and mom and dad are like ‘you’re alive?'”

Callum: “my parents don’t really talk to my sisters anymore.”

Pressed for more, he says his parents were “running around calling up all (their) other family seeing if they had heard anything.” He added “they didn’t really know anything to go off.”

Because what this is all getting at here is when someone dies you don’t call them to ask them if they’re dead. I’m sure some people call numbers to live voicemails to gain closure but you don’t pick up the phone and call a dead person.

Keep listening on Instagram or on Instagram:

It’s absolutely wild that this story will contribute to at least one person, at the very least, calling a dead person in an attempt to confirm they are actually dead. That’s ultimately where all this headed.

But, to put a bow on this, the radio hosts asked the New Zealand man named Callum how his parents reacted when he finally contacted them. He says “my mum was absolutely in tears and my dad was just kinda gobsmacked. He was just like what the f— is going on?!”

He then revealed his sisters told the parents he had died from a stabbing which is at least somewhat interesting because that would have appeared in the news. I know it sounds morbid, but if your immediate family member had died from a stabbing wouldn’t you at least look up that news story as it would presumably be big news?
