One of the most infamous emblems of violence and insanity in modern times has died. Charles Manson, murderer and cult leader, passed away Sunday of natural causes at in a California State Prison. He was 83.

Manson used his flamboyant personality to amass a loyal cult following, whom he instructed to committed a series of nine murders at four locations in July and August 1969. The failed singer/songwriter’s ascribed to the idea of Helter Skelter–a term he took from the 1968 Beatles song of the same name–which he preached to his followers was a coded prophecy of an apocalyptic war arising from racial tensions between blacks and whites. He hoped his murders would expedite this race war.

Despite being one of the world’s worst people, popular culture has embraced Manson as a sadistic cult hero of sorts. He had a presence in fashion, graphics, music, and movies. Hundreds of musicians have covered his songs he performed as a singer/songwriter before starting The Manson Family. The true crime book titled Helter Skelter detailing the Manson murders is the best-selling true crime book in history.

Decades later, Manson’s influence reigns on. Marilyn Manson (real name Brian Warner) created his stage name by combining Marilyn Monroe with Charles Manson. Following the news of Charles’ death, Marilyn posted a tweet that featured his cover of Sick City – originally released on Charles Manson’s 1970 album Lie: The Love and Terror Cult.

Many mouth breathers on Twitter mistook the death of the cult killer for the death of the comparably weird singer, Marilyn. Bask in the stupidity below.

Oh, this person isn’t mistaking the two. She’s just sad a serial killer was killed.

The anti-drug people gave him a $50 savings bond for his brave contribution to crime-fighting, and upon the bond’s maturity 10 years later, he used it to buy his very first bag of marijuana.
