A sequel to the 2012 Harmony Korine-directed pseudo cult classic Spring Breakers is in the works. Original producers Chris Hanley and Jordan Gertner are returning for the sequel, which is titled Spring Breakers: Salvation Mountain.
In the original film — which sees a group of college girls on spring break in St. Petersburg, Florida descend into a world of drugs and crime after meeting a drug dealer (named Alien, infamously played by James Franco) — the titular Spring Breakers were played by Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine.
None will be returning for the upcoming sequel, which will instead feature Bella Thorne, Grace Van Dien, Ariel Martin, and True Whitaker, and be directed by 72-year-old filmmaker Matthew Bright.
“The four are set to play a group of rebellious girls who hit the road for spring break in a crime thriller described as ‘a bold new ride for Gen Z.’ But, as per the synopsis, ‘When their trip explodes out of control, they’re forced to outrun the chaos they’ve created.'”
“‘We’re thrilled to be working with Christian and Capture on Spring Breakers: Salvation Mountain and excited to keep exploring bold, new, disruptive stories around that wild, fever dream of youth The desire for spring break to go on forever is something we’ve never let go of,'” the producers said in a statement, via Variety.
Spring Breakers actually takes up a somewhat important place in modern film history as it was one of the four films A24 released in 2013, the studio’s first year of distributing movies.
The other three non-Spring Breakers films from A24 that year made a combined $23 million, while Spring Breakers racked up $32 million, giving A24 a much-needed early box office hit.
A24 has since established itself as a major force in Hollywood and won two Academy Awards for Best Picture: Moonlight in 2017 and Everything Everywhere All At Once in 2023.
