Filet mignon is widely considered to be a delicacy. However, one New York-based server has divided viewers after sharing her restaurant’s filet mignon special.
The video, which has garnered 17,400 views, begins with server Misha (@mishagrebenchikova) saying, “This is how our filet mignon special looks like.”
She then switches the camera to show the plated dish and describes it to viewers. The steak itself is wrapped in bacon, topped with grated cheese, and absolutely smothered in crab hollandaise sauce. It is served with a side of asparagus and roast potatoes.
BroBible reached out to Misha via Instagram direct message.
How Did Commenters React?
A lot of commenters weren’t a fan of the meal.
“Nope,” one simply wrote. “Leave the meat alone!!!”
“If you put cheese on my filet mignon someone’s getting yelled at,” a second said.
“You don’t put anything on filet,” claimed another.
“They did way too much to that filet,” a fourth added. “When prepared right, filets don’t need that much clothing.”
Similarly, a fifth agreed, “I like steak not toppings.”
What Is A Steak Oscar?
Also in the comments, multiple users remarked that the filet mignon is actually known as an “Oscar”—though only one of them got the actual name (Steak Oscar) correct. As pointed out by Zestful Kitchen, a Steak Oscar usually consists of a filet mignon that’s topped with crab, asparagus, and either hollandaise or béarnaise sauce.
Based on this, it’s fair to say that the dish at Misha’s restaurant is some variation of the Steak Oscar. The only differences are that asparagus is on the side and there’s no crab meat on top. There’s the addition of bacon and cheese along with the hollandaise sauce and roast potatoes.
Still, the whole point of cooking is switching it up. At least, with this established basis, the meal isn’t exactly the culinary sin that some commenters think it is.
Unusual Filet Mignons
Recently, BroBible reported on two different TikToks that featured strange-looking filet mignons. In one video, a Kroger shopper shared how her filet mignon cuts from the store were able to stretch like Play-Doh. A commentator went viral after sharing how the meat had telltale signs of being cobbled together with “meat glue.” The most damning sign, he said, was the seam down the middle.
Meanwhile, in the other video, TikToker Jordan Colleary (@jordancolleary) shared his Publix-bought filet mignon with viewers. As he rubbed the meat—which was cooked to medium-rare—between his fingers, it became apparent that the steak had a gooey and gummy-like texture. Clearly, this wasn’t normal for steak. While this led to panic that the filet mignon was lab-grown, the more likely explanation is that the meat is spoiling. This happens when enzymes begin to break it down. An alternate explanation is that, simply, it was poor-quality meat.
