Whether you own your own home or choose to rent, there’s one thing we all have in common: neighbors. Sometimes your neighbors become lifelong friends. Sometimes you barely know them at all. And sometimes, in the worst cases, they become public enemy number one (looking at you, Chris Hemsworth, and millennials).

To find out which type of neighbor you are most likely to run into in various cities in America, home improvement services site ImproveNet recently surveyed 2,500 people living in two dozen cities around the U.S. to find out how people feel about their neighbors.

Their analysis covers overall levels of frustration by ranking the cities with the most annoying neighbors, the prevalence of 36 common annoyances, and the touchy subject of confrontation (54% of Americans have confronted a nuisance neighbor).

Here’s what they discovered…

• Atop the list of most annoying cities are Dallas, Miami and Austin.

• Cities where neighbors are least annoying include Minneapolis, Portland and Atlanta.

Hmm, does climate may play a role with neighbors? Four of the five most annoying cities are in hot, southern climates, while four of the five least annoying cities are in temperate climates further north. Food for thought.

• Noise is the leading offense with loud music being the top culprit in that category, and no city has the volume turned up higher than Houston.

• People also cite loud kids, pets and TVs as top ten issues, but drowning those out are the loud voices of our fellow adults.

• Loud talking and shouting is the second most annoying thing that neighbors do

Other complaints that made the list include: general grumpiness, parking issues, dog poop (hello, Nashville), smells, and filth like overflowing garbage, a trashy yard, or a dirty home exterior.

• 54 percent of Americans have confronted a neighbor about their grips, while 46 percent have not, so it’s a pretty even bet.

• Face-to-face is the preferred method, followed by calling the police, and then a phone call being the third most-used way of confronting a neighbor.

Cities where people are most likely to confront an annoying neighbor? San Antonio, San Diego and Houston.
