Everyone’s had that day at work—the one that feels like you’re locked into a situation you’re never going to be able to escape. A situation where no matter how hard you try, you can’t get the day back on track.
That goes double for service industry jobs. Every server has a story of the worst table ever. For one waitress, Pink Demon Madi (@pinkdemonmadi), the worst table she ever served came with a side of sugar-sweet politeness.
It was as confusing as it was frustrating. And the internet loves it. The TikTok has gone viral, with over 501,000 views.
‘The Worst Table I’ve Ever Had’
After a recent shift, Madi told a tale of steak and misbehavior. “Let me set the scene for you: It’s 9 o’clock at night. I’m about to be cut,” she starts.
Then a party of 15 walks in. They’re her last table. “And you know, the head lady who’s running the shiizz? She’s great,” Madi says.
The server says, “She’s really sweet. She’s calling me babydoll; she’s calling me babygirl. [And] I’m lovin’ it.” So Madi feels like they’ve got an understanding: “You respect me; I respect you. You get whatever you want.”
But the good vibes didn’t last. Before everyone got their meals, one of the women in the party complained that her food was overcooked. It’s no problem, says Madi. A new steak is easy. But no sooner did it hit the table, and Madi says the woman was complaining again. And two more freshly cooked steaks were again “wrong.”
‘I Don’t Want To Fight You’
Now, the manager got involved. But the complaint escalated: The guest complained about her daughter’s meat, too.
At this point, four different steaks were cooked, and Madi didn’t know what to do or how to remedy the situation. It was made worse by the fact that the table continued to be super nice to Madi but “so rude to everybody else,” she says.
A sixth new steak comes out, and was rejected. So now, another manager was forced to get involved. He told them: No more steaks. “‘We can’t get it right for you. There’s just not much we can do for you,” Madi recalls.
Then, the guest started to have a meltdown, Madi alleges. The guest confronted the manager and violated his personal space. He, per Madi, told her not to touch him and that he’s “not going to fight her.”The guest’s response is to push her index finger into his cheek and say, “You’re on the clock. What are you going to do about it?”
He offered a refund or gift cards.
Meanwhile, some of the men at the table started throwing things, pouring their drinks out on the table, and flipping plates over, according to Madi. Madi says the police were called (the behavior constitutes assault). They escort the table away, and Madi couldn’t go home, as the restaurant was on lockdown.
Staff Need Full-Time Security
It’s rare that the internet wholeheartedly rallies behind an individual. But six steaks seems to be a real rallying point.
“THIS is why after 15 years later, and not being in the food industry anymore, I STILL have nightmares,” one viewer shared.
One user even says that this type of behavior is not uncommon. “Close to where I work, our sister location, this is an every weekend scenario. Now have full time security…for servers!! People are wild!” they said.
While one hungry commenter wants to know something else entirely. “My question is what do you guys do with them re-cooks?”asked a third.
When Can A Restaurant Call The Police?
Since restaurants are generally private property, owners and managers are well within their rights to involve the authorities when circumstances call for it. According to the legal site, JustAnswer, restaurants don’t even have to provide a reason.
Though common reasons include assault, abuse, theft, and illegal activities because “property owners have discretion to refuse service or entry without court intervention,” according to that site.
So if you find yourself in an imperfect steak situation, resist the urge to misbehave and consider the chicken dish instead.
