‘I Mean She’s Clearly Innocent’: Texas Student Fails Drug Test. Then She Realizes This Popular Snack From Costco Was The Culprit

A Texas woman filmed her devastated sister after she found out she failed her school’s drug test. However, it may have been a popular Costco snack, not illegal substances, that caused the result.

In a video with over 51 million views, TikToker Lauren (@llaurenaikenn) sits across from her younger sister at their kitchen island. The younger woman cries and waves her hands in distress as a man tries to comfort her.

On-screen text reads, “POV: your little sister fails her school mandated drug test (she ate poppy seed muffins every day for breakfast).” The caption continues, “@Costco Wholesale pls sponsor her, she’s obviously a huge fan of your almond poppy seed muffins.”

Why Did Poppy Seeds Make Her Fail The Drug Test?

Poppy seeds, which are a common ingredient in baked goods and some seasonings, come from the opium poppy plant. That’s the same plant that the opioids codeine and morphine come from.

According to the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (ADLM), the poppy seeds found in baked goods don’t actually contain opioids. However, the way the seeds are processed can contaminate the seeds with morphine and codeine.

When consumed frequently or in large amounts, these opioids can show up on hair, urine, or saliva drug tests, causing a false positive result.

Can She Argue Her Inaccurate Drug Test Results?

In the comments, viewers assure the TikToker’s sister that it’s not her fault and say they also frequently purchase the Costco poppy seed muffins.

“Those lemon poppy seed muffins are BOMB I understand her,” one wrote.

“I don’t blame her. I dream about those poppy seed muffins,” another said.

“You can tell she absolutely did not know, and her dad is just trying to comfort her bro i actually feel bad,” a third added.

Others suggested that there may be a way to remedy the failed drug test by explaining what caused the positive result.

“This is why they’re SUPPOSED to ask if you’ve eaten poppy seeds before they do any drug tests anywhere (all my jobs did before I was drug tested). They set that poor girl up for failure and pure panic,” a commenter suggested.

“My mom failed her drug test for work once for this reason. her manager let her stop eating poppy seed muffins for a week and she passed after that,” another said.

An Update

In a comment, Lauren shares an update on her sister’s drug test. She wrote, “She wasn’t allowed to participate in athletics until she took another test. She’s all good now!”

Some say they avoid poppy seeds altogether to avoid the hassle of explaining a false positive.

“My dad LOVED lemon poppy seed muffins and ate them a lot in the army. the man had to cut them out completely bc he kept failing the drug tests,” a viewer shared.

“I had poppy seed muffins ONE TIME and went to a psychiatrist the same day. I tested positive on the drug test bc of it and they were so mean and judgy. Kept calling me a liar. I never had poppy seed muffins again when I found out,” a second said.

“ATP HR has told us to just skip poppy seeds altogether,” another added.
