Danny McBride was tremendous in his previous HBO comedies that he starred and co-created: Eastbound & Down and Vice Principals. Now he returns to Home Box Office with another promising comedy series: The Righteous Gemstones. And in this new TV show, Danny will have some all-star comedic talents at his side.

HBO has given Danny McBride the greenlight on another new series and this holy roller comedy looks fantastic. Instead of arrogant baseball players, McBride takes on corrupt televangelists, who may dip their greedy hands into the collection plate a little too deep.

“The new comedy centers around a world-famous televangelist family with a long tradition of deviance, greed and charitable work — all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ,” reads HBO’s description of the upcoming comedy. “McBride will star as main character Jesse Gemstone, who sees himself as a maverick in the ministry game, taking what his father, Eli Gemstone, has built and expanded it for a more modern audience. In addition to playing Jesse, McBride will also serve as a writer, director and executive producer on the series.”

Playing the elder Eli Gemstone is comedy legend John Goodman. McBride’s character has two siblings: fellow Vice Principal star Edi Patterson as Jesse’s sister Judy and former Workaholics star Adam Devine is Jesse’s younger brother Kelvin.

Cassidy Freeman from Smallville plays Jesse’s wife Amber, who is a former journalist turned devout church-goer. Tony Cavalero of School of Rock fame is ex-Satanist Keefe Chambers who saved by Kelvin. Drunk History‘s Tim Baltz plays Judy’s fiance BJ and Greg Alan Williams, who was Coach “Doc Hines from Remember the Titans is Eli’s right-hand man, Martin Imari.

McBride said his televangelist family is not based on one real-life person or one megachurch family, but an “amalgamation.” He adds that the characters in the TV show are people “who believed they were owed something in life.”

McBride assures the audience that the show is not a hit piece on religion or Christianity. “The goal isn’t to be a takedown of anything,” McBride said. “When Hollywood takes on religion, they make the mistake of lampooning one’s beliefs.”

“For us, it’s about lampooning hypocrites — people who present themselves in one way, an act differently in another,” McBride explains. “I don’t think that’s something that’s relevant [only] to the world of religion and televangelism but the world we live in: People who present themselves one way on social media and present themselves in another way.”

McBride referenced his aunt, who is a minister, and how he wanted to create a comedy that she’ll find funny. “Ultimately, it’s not about taking a swipe at her or what she believes in, but a show about a successful family who lost their path along the way.”

Devine said he was raised Catholic and was “jealous of my friends who went to mega-churches. They had rock-climbing walls and got to play video games. All we had was a hard bench.”

The Righteous Gemstones was filmed in the Charleston area, where McBride fell in love with the Low Country after an encounter with Bill Murray during the plane ride home from scouting South Carolina. McBride would embrace the Low Country so much that he bought a house in the Charleston area.

The Righteous Gemstones has nine episodes in Season 1 and premieres at 10 p.m. Sunday, August 18.
