Tom Cruise Is Set To Become The First Civilian To Do A Spacewalk

Clearly not satisfied with merely breaking box office records, Tom Cruise looks set to soon push the boundaries of what filmmaking can be as the 60-year-old A-lister will reportedly become the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the International Space Station.

Tom Cruise has a movie in the works that will see him become the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the International Space Station

Langley tells BBC News that Cruise plans to take a rocket up to the International Space Station. The movie plot, which Cruise and director Doug Liman pitched to her on Zoom during the pandemic, “actually takes place on earth, and then the character needs to go up to space to save the day”.

The hope, she adds, is that Cruise will be “the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station”. [via BBC]

Given the minor miracle that Cruise pulled off with the billion-dollar-grossing Top Gun: Maverick, it would be a fool’s errand to doubt that he’s capable of pulling something as insane as a *real* spacewalk off.

At this time, Cruise’s space film does not have a release date, although it does have a director: Edge of Tomorrow filmmaker Doug Liman.

As for the next time we’ll see Cruise on the big screen, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is set to hit theaters on July 14, 2023, and will then be followed by Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two on June 28, 2024.
