Fellas, should you ever encounter a Maryland woman by the name of Kimberly Winter and she challenges you to a burping contest, beware.

That’s because Kimberly “Kimycola” Winter holds the Guinness World Record for the loudest burp ever recorded by a woman. Her booming belch was recorded at a record-setting 107.3 decibels.

For comparison’s sake, GWR lists the holder for the loudest burp ever by a man at 12.7 dB from Neville Sharp of Australia. He set is record back in 2021.

Featured in a video today, she shows off her incredible burping skills.

Now feels as good of a time as any to discuss burping. It can be considered rude or poor manners in the United States and in Western culture but in Taiwan and China it is considered to be a form of flattery. Suffice it to say this world record burp holder would be treated like a queen in some places around the world for her burping skills.

Burping is part of life. It is quite odd that it became taboo. Historians are also unclear on when burping grew out of fashion in Western culture. The Miller’s Tale in Chaucers Canterbury Tales had a brup joke dating back to 1386: “This Nicholas anon leet fle a fart, As greet as it had been a thonder-dent, That with the strook he was almoost yblent.”

And the world’s oldest joke is a fart joke that dates back to 1900 BC, according to Reuters. That joke reads “Something which has never occurred since time immemorial; a young woman did not fart in her husband’s lap.”

Humans have been cracking jokes about passing gas, burping and farting, for thousands and thousands of years. It’s about time we got back to celebrating these records beyond just the Guinness Book of World Records.

And for those who are curious, here is a video on the science of burping:

Fascinating stuff!
