The 2023 World Series of Poker Main Event will conclude on Monday and an American will take home the record-setting $12.1 million 1st place prize.

9 players gathered for Day 1 of the WSOP Main Event final table on Sunday. 3 of the final 9 players were from the United States. When play concluded on Sunday night, all three Americans were still alive in the tournament and all six international players had been sent packing.

This means there will be an American winner of the WSOP Main Event for the first time since John Cynn won $8,800,000 and the coveted gold bracelet in 2018. Europeans have made a great showing in the Main Event and in WSOP events in recent years which some credit to the United States’ restrictions on online poker and Europeans/Internationals thriving while American poker players have faced setbacks.

With 9 players meeting for the WSOP Final Table on Sunday, 8 of the 9 were guaranteed at least a million dollars.

Italy’s Daniel Holzner came in as the short stack and finished in 9th for $900,000. Holzner could never find momentum at the final table but his fate seemed sealed when his pocket aces ran up against TT, one of the most frustrating starting hands in tournament poker. Jachtmann hit a set on the flop and somehow Holzner prevented all his chips from going in the middle but he was severely crippled after this hand:

Spain’s Juan Maceiras was eliminated in 8th and earned $1,125,000. England’s Toby Lewis finished in 7th for $1,425,000. Dean Hutchinson of Scotland was out in 6th for $1,850,000 after not finding any cards and avoiding playing hands for most of the day.

Ruslan Prydryk of Ukraine was eliminated in 5th place but earned $2,400,000 for his efforts. Prydryk was running on fumes when he shoved all in with QcTc and faced Weinman’s AsJd.

Former WSOP bracelet winner with 19 WSOP cashes, Jan-Peter Jachtmann of Germany, was out in 4th place for $3,000,000.

Jachtmann was eliminated on this hand when he ran up against pocket aces:

That left just the Americans: Adam Walton with 165.5M in chips, Daniel Weinman with 199M chips, and Steven Jones with 238M chips.
