Greg McElroy found himself entangled in an online beef with former Alabama player Alphonse Taylor after bashing the two-time national champ on his podcast. The ESPN personality’s comments came as a response to being called a hater of his alma mater.

The narrative resurfaced this week due to McElroy’s thoughts on five-star OL Kadyn Proctor’s transfer decision.

“A lot of people are all bent out of shape about the tampering. Y’all – it’s about relationships,” he said about the lineman opting to return home to Iowa.

“I think he can be a difference maker, an All-Big Ten potential type of player for the Hawkeyes. Him returning home was huge.”

Alabama supporters didn’t love the reaction to losing one of their up and coming stars.

McElroy caught wind of the response, taking a moment to call out a number of his perceived haters in an episode of McElroy and Cubelic.

“I’m a little bit tired of this narrative that I don’t like my school,” the Crimson Tide passer said.

“I just want to address it. I’m really fed up with it. All these clowns – the Barstool Bamas, Cruz Oxenreider, [former Alabama player] Alphonse Taylor – who I don’t even remember playing. I just remember him being described as the laziest dude on the roster.

“He’s trying to remain relevant… He uses Bama. I don’t.”

Taking exception to the criticism, Taylor responded with a series of online replies.

“Oh brother, looks like I hit a soft spot huh, Greg ‘ol pal?” he wrote on X. “Got your panties in a bunch? Trying to take little cheap shots on my character when you don’t know the first thing about me. What do I use Bama for exactly? What clout am I seeking?”

Taylor played for the Tide between 2012 and 2016, landing a pair of national titles. As an offensive lineman, he opened up holes for the likes of Derrick Henry and Damien Harris.

McElroy, meanwhile, left Tuscaloosa two seasons before Taylor’s arrival, where he led the Tide to its first championship under Nick Saban.

After receiving blowback for his remarks, the quarterback opened Thursday’s episode of McElroy and Cubelic by addressing the situation, saying his emotions got the best of him.

The two have seemingly squashed the beef after both a private and public apology.

Still, Taylor likely has a sour taste in his mouth from the online exchange, and calling out former Alabama players won’t do anything to quiet the narrative that Greg McElroy hates his alma mater.
