Jannik Sinner headed into the French Open as the favorite to get a victory at the tournament he needed to win to complete the career Grand Slam. However, he’ll have to wait at least another year after his shocking defeat in the second round, which ended up being very costly for one gambler who lost a ton of money on a “guaranteed” bet.
In April, we learned Carlos Alcarez would not have the chance to pull off a three-peat at the French Open after announcing he was withdrawing from the tournament due to a lingering wrist injury. That was a major break for Jannik Sinner, the top-ranked Italian who fell to the Spaniard in the finals at Roland Garros in 2025.
Sinner was listed as an overwhelming -900 favorite to win it all heading into the tournament, and he opened things up by dispatching Clement Tabur in straight sets in the first round. That extended a winning streak that stretched back to February to 30 matches, and it seemed safe to assume that number would rise to 31 on Thursday.
However, that did not end up being the case, and one bettor who thought they were on track to make some easy money ended up losing much, much more than they stood to gain.
Someone lost $55,000 in their quest to win $1,000 by betting on Jannik Sinner at the French Open
Sinner’s opponent in the second round of the French Open was Juan Manuel Cerundolo, the 24-year-old Argentinian who was sitting at No. 56 in the ATP singles rankings.
All signs point to the former cruising to another victory after winning the first two sets 6-3 and 6-2, but things started to get interesting after Cerundolo rallied out of a 5-1 hole in the third to win it 7-5. It became increasingly clear that the brutal heat in Paris was getting to Sinner, who imploded while dropping the next two sets with back-to-back 6-1 showings en route to being eliminated.
That was not an ideal development for one man with the handle @FoaznPoker, who hopped online last night to post about the “guaranteed” wagers he made on DraftKings (to the tune of $5,000) and Kalshi ($50,000) in the hopes of waking up around $1,000 richer.
If you saw $999.07 on the ground, you’d pick it up, right? Jannik Sinner🔐
Couple things:
•Sinner is GUARANTEED to win
•Foazn won’t wake up at 5am to watchI make money in my sleep; you wake up to make money #levels pic.twitter.com/SRG1Ux66iW

However, that did not end up being the case.
They were not the only person who suffered a significant loss, as someone else threw down €31,430 (~$36,600) on Betfair to win .1% of that sum after Sinner appeared to be on the verge of victory in the third set only to watch it disappear.
The initial bettor said the loss wiped out their gains for the year on both of the platforms they used, but they had a better sense of humor about the development than most people would after losing that much dough.
