Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran is in hot water again for a negative interaction with a fan. During Tuesday night’s game between the Red Sox and the Minnesota Twins at Target Field, Duran flipped off a fan after grounding out in the top of the fifth inning.
After the game, Jarren Duran explained why he did it.
“Somebody told me to kill myself,” he said. “I’m used to it at this point. S— happens. I’m going to flip somebody off if they say something to me. It is what it is. I shouldn’t react like that, but that stuff is still kind of triggering. It happens.”
Duran, who has a history of getting into altercations with fans, revealed last year during the Netflix series The Clubhouse: A Year With the Red Sox that he attempted suicide in 2022.
“I was already hearing it from fans,” Duran admitted on the show. “And what they said to me, [it was like], ‘I’ve told myself 10 times worse in the mirror.’ That was a really tough time for me. I didn’t even want to be here anymore.”
Jarren Duran went on to reveal that he had a rifle and a bullet, and when he pulled the trigger, the gun clicked, but nothing happened.
“So, to this day, I think God just didn’t let me take my own life because I seriously don’t know why it didn’t go off. I took it as a sign of, ‘I might have to be here for a reason’, so that’s when I started to look myself in the mirror after the gun didn’t go off. I was like, ‘Do I want to be here or do I not want to be here?’ That happened for a reason and obviously, you’re here for a reason so let’s be the way you want to be and play [the way] you want to play and live the way you want to live.”
On Tuesday, Duran blamed himself for the fan crossing a line that most would not.
“Honestly, it’s my fault for talking about my mental health because I kind of brought in the haters. So I’ve just got to get used to it,” he said. “I didn’t really tell anybody so like, that’s on me. Just trying to hold it in and not really bring that up to the team. We’re trying to win a game. I shouldn’t even bring that up to anybody. It’s not really something I want to be like, Bro, you should have heard what this guy said to me.’ That’s not the most important thing. The most important thing is win the game and yeah, it just happens.”
