The Denver Broncos became legitimate Super Bowl contenders in the eyes of Las Vegas sportsbooks after trading for Russell Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks. Denver jumped from 44/1 odds a week ago to 12/1 (as of yesterday) to win the Super Bowl. On the flip side, Seattle jumped from +1800 to +8000 to win the Super Bowl with sportsbooks assuming Seattle will see a massive regression without Russ.

The Seahawks did get a lot of pieces in the Russell Wilson trade. They brought in QB Drew Lock, TE Noah Fant, DL Shelby Harris, two first-round NFL Draft picks, two second-round picks, and a fifth-round pick. Some of those NFL Draft picks could have an immediate impact on the Seattle Seahawks next season but there will likely be a lag between this trade and Seahawks’ success.

Chris Broussard of FS1’s First Things First is now out here basically arguing that there won’t be a lag because the Seahawks will never see success from this trade. He’s using historical precedent to show that trading a 10-12 win quarterback has NEVER worked before.

Chris Broussard Says History Shows Seattle Trading Russell Wilson Was A Bad Move

Calling Russell Wilson a ‘Hall of Fame quarterback’ is a bit of a stretch, isn’t it? Broussard correctly points out that Russell Wilson only trails Peyton Manning for the most wins in the first 10 years of their NFL careers. But Russell Wilson hasn’t locked up his gold jacket in the NFL Hall of Fame just yet, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

In the first 10 seasons of Russ’ career, the only time he didn’t hit 10 wins was a 9-7 season in 2019 and last year when Russ was hobbled by an injury. Now Wilson comes back to a new team, fresh off an injury, and the expectations for him are essentially ‘Super Bowl or Bust’ because Denver bet the house on him just like the Rams did with Matthew Stafford.

Do NFL Fans Agree With Chris Broussard’s Comments?

Here’s what NFL fans and First Things First viewers are saying about Broussard’s comments…

Jay Cutler was close!

This is a valid point. If it’s never actually happened before then why should we believe that trading for a QB in his prime won’t work?

Seattle fans are down bad…

It does seem like Russell Wilson wanted out of Seattle and the Seahawks maximized their return on him with a ton of picks. If Russ wasn’t happy and needed out then his was, in fact, the right move. But only time will tell.
