Based on his recent comments to the media, Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard seems to think that the Colts should fire their GM, who has failed. This, of course, is him.

While evaluating his performance this season, the 53-year-old Ballard — who has been the franchise’s general manager since 2017 — bluntly said that he “failed” and revealed that he’s “fired himself 50 times this year.”

“I failed,” Ballard’s comments to the media began.

“We live in a world [working in the NFL] where failure’s not allowed. When you fail in this world you get canceled and everybody wants your head. And rightfully so in some cases. But if you’re able to go through it and learn from it, you can reach your greatest heights… I’ve fired myself 50 times this year. I sit in that press box and just agonize.”

The main problem that Ballard has had in recent seasons is his inability to find a quarterback to take the team to the next level. Since Andrew Luck retired following the 2018 season, the Colts have started seven different quarterbacks.

More worryingly, though, are the quarterbacks Ballard has chosen to get the team over the hump, such as Philip Rivers (who did lead the team to the playoffs, to be fair), Carson Wentz (who didn’t even last 12 months with the team), and Matt Ryan (who clearly should’ve retired this year instead).

Courtesy of their 4-12-1 record, the Colts — who finished last in the AFC South this season — will have the #4 overall pick in the first round of this April’s NFL Draft. With that pick, the Colts will likely have a shot to take one of the top quarterback prospects in the draft if they so desire.
