Dallas Cowboys Cut Struggling Kicker Brett Maher Directly After He Visited Sick Kids In The Hospital With Teammates

The Dallas Cowboys have officially ended their relationship with kicker Brett Maher, who leads the NFL with 10 missed field goal attempts this season.

The 30-year-old, who has bounced around the NFL and CFL over his seven-year professional career, helped toss the last shovel of dirt on his grave during Thursday’s loss to the Chicago Bears, when he shanked a 42-yard attempt in the second quarter that would have knotted the score at 10. The miss put Maher at a very bad 1-of-4 from 40 yards and beyond the past three games.

The Nebraska native was likely hoping to earn some good karma when he arrived at the children’s hospital with his (now ex) teammates to bring some light to sick kids in the Dallas area.

Instead, he was notified that he lost his job.

Good on Maher for handling it gracefully, but it’s not like he could have made a case for himself, given the raw data.

Maher’s 10th miss was the most in a season for a kicker in the past four seasons and his 1-of-5 from 40-49 yards this season made him one of three kickers in the past 20 years to connect on 20% or worse of those kicks, ESPN reports.

The Cowboys signed veteran kicker Kai Forbath, who was cut last week by the New England Patriots.

Cold business.
