Former Las Vegas Raiders and New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr says NFL teams have contacted him to come out of retirement, and he hasn’t completely ruled it out.
Derek Carr shocked the football world in 2025 when he decided to retire at the age of just 34. Carr was guaranteed $30 million for the 2025 season, but decided that with a torn labrum and significant degenerative damage to his rotator cuff, he was done with football.
The four-time Pro Bowler was coming off a good, but injury-shortened season in which he completed 67.7% of his passes in 10 games for 2,145 yards and 15 touchdowns with just five interceptions. In fact, his 101.0 QB rating was the second-highest of his career that season.
So, despite the need for surgery and a lengthy rehab, Derek Carr still had some gas left in the tank when he retired. At just 35-years-old, and with the quarterback position being a significant need for several NFL teams, he says multiple general managers have contacted him and asked him to come out of retirement.
Derek Carr is still high on the list of potential quarterback replacements
“I never say never,” Carr told the NFL Network this week. “It would take a special situation. There were multiple teams that reached out to me this offseason. I won’t say who or how, but they reached out and were gauging my interest on what I wanted to do. They were good, solid football teams.”
“I’m just at the point where I just want to win. I want to win. So if I were to do it, it would have to be a special team that maybe lost somebody or needed somebody, but even then, it’s not guaranteed,” Carr continued. “I’m having too much fun hanging out with my wife, hanging out with my kids, and trying to get good at golf. So it would take a special deal.”
He added, “I’m always training. I’ll be in shape and ready, but probably not. I’ll probably be just coaching my kids.”
