The New York Giants have surprised the football world this season by jumping out to a 4-1 start. That includes wins over the Green Bay Packers and the AFC South-leading Tennessee Titans.

Despite their early season success, ESPN’s Kimberly Martin had a ridiculous suggestion for the Giants. She believes they should be playing for a better draft pick the rest of the season instead of trying to win.

ESPN analyst believes New York Giants should want to lose the rest of the season

Being mediocre in the middle of the pack doesn’t help you. Be terrible. Get a high draft pick. You have to think about the rebuild. With the Giants, there’s a future beyond just this season. Them making the playoffs is great for the fans and our staff, but then a lot of questions need to be answered.

I understand the sentiment here. She isn’t wrong about being a team right in the middle of the league usually being a negative a for a team. It puts you in a position to not really compete in the playoffs, but also not get a draft pick that helps you change that in the future.

The issue is that this isn’t really applicable to the Giants right now. We aren’t talking about a team in the middle of the pack. The Giants are 4-1 right now. That’s a better record than any team in 2 of the NFC’s other divisions. They have at least 5 more games on their schedule where they’ll likely be favored to win.

If they win those, that’s 9 wins and likely playoff spot. That doesn’t include a game at the Commanders and one at home against the Colts. It wouldn’t surprise anybody if they won either of those.

It’s also not really clear how she thinks the Giants would be able to tank right now. Usually that entails getting rid of older players that are helping you win games. The Giants don’t have a ton of players in that category. Saquon Barkley is probably the only player they could trade this season that might not be a part of their future plans and even he’s on a rookie deal.

The Giants are actually one of the rare teams where just making the playoffs is probably a positive. For them, it would mean that their young players are developing and their draft picks are starting to pay off.

For the Giants, this season is a sign of good things to come and they should take this season to see just how far a talented young defense can carry them.
