Georgia Heisman Candidate Brock Bowers Likely Headed For Surgery That Could End Season

The Georgia Bulldogs’ quest to become the first undisputed three-time college football national champion since Minnesota in 1936 may have just hit a major, major snag.

Georgia’s superstar tight end Brock Bowers, a project first round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, appears headed to the operating table after suffering an injury Saturday against the Vanderbilt Commodores.

Dawgs Central publisher Graham Coffey reports that Bowers is likely to have tightrope surgery following a high ankle sprain in the 37-20 victory.

“I was told tonight that tight rope surgery was recommended to Bowers and his family today,” Coffey wrote. “That is the same procedure that Amarius Mims and Lawson Luckie both underwent recently to repair their high ankle spains. The average recovery time is 3-6 weeks, but that time table can vary depending on numerous factors.”

On one hand, 3-6 weeks doesn’t sound too bad. But as Coffey stated, that timetable is not set in stone. And Bowers’ status as one of the top players in the coming NFL Draft could affect his willingness to rush back.

Though Coffey spoke with a source that reported Bowers hopes to return to the field as quickly as possible.

Brock Bowers Has Done Everything For The Georgia Bulldogs In 2023

If he cannot, it would be a huge loss for a Bulldogs offense that has finally gotten going in recent weeks.

Bowers leads Georgia in receptions (41), yards (567) and receiving touchdowns (4) this season. His combination of speed and elite hands have proven to be a nightmare for opposing defenders.

“It’s a wide receiver league, and if this world were fair, we’d eliminate any sort of title to Bowers and simply make him the X receiver. In a mismatch league, he is one of the most significant chess pieces we’ve seen in recent history. He should not make it out of the top 15 picks,” Dalton Miller of Pro Football Network wrote in his scouting report.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart said postgame that he believed Bowers suffered a low ankle sprain. But it appears the second opinion said others.

And if Bowers is out for a significant period of time, the Dawgs’ title hopes just took a major, major hit.
