Gio Lopez is no longer the starting quarterback of the North Carolina football team. The signal caller transferred in the offseason to join a rival.
He’ll suit up for Wake Forest in the 2026 season. He and his family recently opened up on the reasons for abandoning Bill Belichick.
Lopez says he lost his love of the game. An authoritarian staff refused outside opinion. He’s left monotony for excitement with the Demon Deacons.
Gio Lopez left North Carolina.
The decision comes after just one season. His short stint did enough to force change. He butted heads with leadership.
Lopez was brought in through the transfer portal following two years at South Alabama. With the Jaguars, he was a star that flashed the ability to create on the go with both his arms and his legs.
The quarterback threw for 2,559 yards as a sophomore. He added 463 on the ground. Lopez accounted for 25 touchdowns to earn Sun Belt honorable mention recognition.
He hit the transfer portal ahead of his junior year. Bill Belichick targeted him to be the starting passer in his debut season. The marriage largely failed.
Lopez’s production dipped. His style of play did not gel with the scheme. Belichick and co. refused to adapt the offense to his skillset. As a result, he bailed for an ACC rival.
Bill Belichick wanted his QB to be Tom Brady.

Upon arriving to Chapel Hill, the head coach got his new signal caller to study film of former New England Patriots quarterbacks. Lopez is not the same player as those mentioned.
That has nothing to do with talent. Simply put, he is not a pocket passer. His game thrives on creativity and controlled chaos.
He’s best when getting outside the pocket and using his legs. He is a true dual threat. Those abilities were highlighted at South Alabama. They were not allowed to be utilized at UNC.
The Tar Heels put him in a box. They wanted him to be someone he wasn’t. There was no room for change, his dad said.
“You were ridiculed if you didn’t do it exactly the way he was told.”
North Carolina did not trust Lopez with audibles. His on-field opinion held little weight, according to his father, Barney. It was ‘my way or the highway.’
“You could be at the dang line, see the play is about to be blown up, but if you try to call it off or audible, you were ridiculed.”
Lopez chose the highway.
Why Wake Forest?
“Gio has always loved the game of football, and he was losing the love for it when he was over there [at North Carolina]. Being at Wake Forest and with Coach Ezell, the type of coaches he’s used to who have the excitement he likes, it’s been game-changing for him.”
-Barney Lopez
There is energy at Wake Forest. The coaching staff is young and spirited. Head coach Jake Dickert is 42 years old. OC Rob Ezell is just 37. They’ve been able to make the game fun with a different approach and style of play.
Gio Lopez said football felt like work at North Carolina, which prides itself on being run like an NFL organization. He said he was often just trying to get through the day. Going through the motions.
That’s changed with the transfer.
“Back at the other school [North Carolina], it felt like there’s no air,” Lopez said. “Here, it’s fun again. They’re moving us in the right direction, energized, and guys are enjoying football. It’s like fresh air.”

Lopez became bored being a quarterback with little voice. Apathy set in. He wasn’t enjoying the ride.
He’s found new energy at Wake Forest. Passion for the game has returned. He hopes it results in a reemergence in his senior year.
