LIV Golf landed its first major TV deal this week. Unfortunately, that agreement is being mocked by many in the sports world.

The social media reaction has been largely negative surrounding LIV’s new partnership, leading the upstart league to become the butt of jokes.

LIV broke onto the scene in 2021, with the first tournament being held in London the following year. Many around the golf community were hesitant to back founder Greg Norman in the endeavor as it was backed largely by Saudi money.

The league’s biggest foe was the PGA, and a season-long faceoff between the pair soon began. LIV started poaching prominent players from the Tour, which resulted in bans of said defectives from events and world rankings.

While some of that noise has seemingly died down, it’s kept LIV Golf from securing a major broadcast network. They were blackballed by certain networks, forcing tournaments last season to be streamed online.

A broadcast partner willing to take on the negative press that’s sure to come with the league has finally surfaced. Front Office Sports reported on a multiyear deal with The CW on Tuesday, and many on the internet are getting a head start on their criticism.

A Multi-year agreement with the nation’s fifth-largest broadcast network is expected to be announced in the coming days… LIV will also continue producing events as it did in its first season, streamed on YouTube and on DAZN.

Financial details were not disclosed, although it’s expected to be a revenue-sharing setup.

The CW and CW Plus have 37 affiliates nationwide, with stations in five of the top 10 TV markets, according to the Nexstar website. The CW reaches an estimated 100 million U.S. households.

That announcement led to quite the reaction on social media.

One person wrote, “LIV Golf is apparently closing a deal with the CW. The league looks to become to worst television drama the CW has ever produced.” Another golf fan asked, “Will it be on before or after the reruns of Dawson’s Creek?”

The internet response didn’t end there.

This follower commented on the revenue sharing idea, saying, “Revenue sharing? Sounds like there will be commercials. Where are all the LIV fans who loved it because of no commercials?” Another jokingly asked, “How much is LIV paying them?”

LIV’s new deal with The CW at least gives the league a way to reach a larger audience, though it still won’t be able to compete with the PGA on that front.
