Josef Newgarden and Louis Foster were both able to walk away from a scary crash during the IndyCar race outside of St. Louis. It was something of a miracle that neither driver suffered so much as a scratch!
Crazy POV videos from the FOX broadcast will take you inside the vehicles as they rolled over the track.
The incident occurred on the 130th lap of the 260-lap IndyCar race at WWT Raceway. Foster lost control of the wheel and spun on his own, which sent him into the wall. He bounced off of the wall in a horizontal direction and essentially intersected with the track. Newgarden was two cars behind Foster during the initial crash. However, the Team Penske driver unfortunately committed in the wrong direction.
There was no way for the latter to avoid the former as he slid back across the track. Newgarden ran out of space as he tried to slip past Foster. He had no other choice but to t-bone his opponent as they slid toward the wall. His left tire ripped off of its axel and the car itself flipped upside down. Sparks were flying while the car slid more than 100 feet down the track.

An AMR safety worker got to Newgarden in less than three seconds. Very impressive.
Incredible that there was an AMR safety worker talking to Newgarden less than 3 seconds after the car stopped moving. https://t.co/YJmUtetIuP pic.twitter.com/D78ZI53e5g

Both drivers walked away from the wreck under their own power. They were later released from the medical center after a brief evaluation.
Hard accidents are not rare for the 1.25-mile oval track, host of the Bommarito 500. This latest incident can be attributed to a build up of tire rubber pellets. They accumulate on the edges of the track and can can cause the car to lose traction. Louis Foster got up into the pellets one too many times.
Got a bit too high on to the dark stuff. I had a wiggle and then I just got into the marbles and was a complete passenger. At that point [I hit the wall], I bent my toe link. I just couldn’t stop from spinning there. Obviously, a pretty scary impact for myself and Josef. I’m glad he’s okay.

Josef Newgarden had a 50/50 chance to avoid Foster. He is not at fault for the wreck but he picked the wrong direction. The collision was inevitable. On-board footage from his car shows there was no way to avoid the contact. It is a crazy POV.

Wrecks happen. Newgarden and Foster seem to be on good terms. They are both very fortunate to be completely unscathed. Not even a scratch!
