Kentucky head coach John Calipari’s future in Lexington is uncertain and based on a recent headline from a local newspaper, someone else’s might be, too!

An unbelievable error in the Lexington Herald-Leader is making the rounds as the college basketball world speculates on Coach Cal’s standing with the Wildcats.

While the ‘Cats have been a mainstay in the NCAA Tournament over Calipari’s 15-year tenure, a recent lack of success in the Big Dance has many supporters infuriated.

Most recently, Kentucky lost as a three-seed to Oakland in the Round of 64 to put a disappointing finish on the 2023-24 campaign. That setback came two years after the Wildcats were sent home by 15-seed Saint Peter’s.

Calipari saw immediate success in Lexington, making four Final Fours over his first six seasons, but those fond memories are long gone. He’s suddenly become enemy No. 1 for a large portion of the UK fanbase.

Will he be roaming the sidelines next season? That remains to be seen.

Talks of his massive $33M buyout are at the head of that discussion, leading one major local newspaper outlet to give its thoughts on the situation at hand.

The Lexington Herald-Leader posted a piece on the head coach this week with the headline showing an argument against writing John Calipari that massive check.

There was only one problem. The paper spelled the coach’s name wrong!

“$33 million Kalipari buyout would be wrong thing to do,” the headline read.

A play on John Calipari and UK? It seems unlikely.

Readers immediately reacted online.

“Coach K is back.”

“Editor had one job!”

“It may not be John Calipari, but someone is getting fired today.”

Tough look for the local newspaper reporting on one of the biggest stories in college basketball.
