John Rhys Plumlee is a remarkable athlete with a very bright future ahead of him. However, as talented as he is, it is extremely hard to imagine a world in which he takes over as the starting quarterback of an NFL organization.

Although there are a lot of folks who would love to see Plumlee become a legitimate QB1 on the pro level — including the moms down in Madison, Mississippi — it is unlikely. He just isn’t on that level.

Plumlee’s future is as a Jack of all trades.

Whichever NFL team chooses to draft him, or sign him as an undrafted free agent, will have one of the most athletic players in the league at their disposal to use in a variety of different ways. As a result, he has drawn a lot of comparisons to Taysom Hill.

That is a very lazy comparison for a white dude with the ability to throw, run and catch, but there literally may not be any other player in the modern era who show out at every skill position like Plumlee. The 23-year-old former three-star recruit has some of the most unique statistical numbers in college football history between his time at Ole Miss and Central Florida.

  • Ole Miss
    • 2019
      • Passing: 79-of-150 for 910 yards and four touchdowns with three interceptions
      • Rushing: 154 carries for 1,023 yards and 12 touchdowns
    • 2020
      • Passing: 5-of-7 for 65 yards and one touchdowns
      • Rushing: 25 carries for 94 yards
      • Receiving: six catches for 79 yards
    • 2021
      • Passing: 1-of-1 for six yards
      • Rushing: 25 carries for 94 yards
      • Receiving: 19 catches for 201 yards
  • UCF
    • 2022
      • Passing: 218-of-346 for 2,586 yards and 14 touchdowns with eight interceptions
      • Rushing: 159 carries for 862 yards and 11 touchdowns
      • Receiving: one catch for 16 yards
    • 2023
      • Passing: 161-of-256 for 2,271 yards and 15 touchdowns with eight inteceptions
      • Rushing: 106 carries for 505 yards and five touchdowns

Plumlee was absolutely electric during his five-year career. He also played baseball for both the Rebels and the Knights, and actually started for the latter.

John Rhys Plumlee is confident!

Jane Slater caught up with Plumlee at the East-West Shrine Bowl earlier this week. He seems to understand that, more than likely, his future in the NFL is as more of a do-it-all athlete and would never turn down the opportunity to play on the next level.

Plumlee also firmly stated his belief that there are no more than 31 quarterbacks in the world better than him. You wouldn’t expect him to say anything else. He believes in himself!!

While that confidence is exactly what you want to see from an NFL Draft prospect, it is a very bold claim. Plumlee, certainly as of this exact moment, is not one of the best 32 quarterbacks in the world and it is pretty wild to say otherwise.
