A joking recommendation for the College Football Playoff selection process is now going viral following a 65-7 blowout in the national championship game. Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel was the source of the suggestion earlier this year, and the comment is now making its way back around social media.

The Vols leader was asked about the criteria for being a playoff team while appearing on the Bussin’ With The Boys podcast. That answer is now a topic of discussion.

Heupel facetiously said that the College Football Playoff committee should just take the top four teams from the SEC. At the time of the comment, Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama were all at the top of the rankings. Ole Miss and LSU weren’t far behind.

Georgia would later beat the Vols, who beat the Tide, resulting in just one conference member getting into the playoff. But those Bulldogs did a number on TCU in the final game.

The comment has now recirculated, with many reacting to the response.

One person wrote, “Josh Heupel was definitely right,” after seeing the clip while another simply posted, “Yes.”

There were those that disagreed, noting the scare that Ohio State gave Georgia in the semifinal. This fan said, “OSU literally had Georgia on the ropes until they shanked the kick…so no.”

While the comment was made in jest, we could have a legitimate path to seeing four teams in the playoff bracket very soon. The committee recently approved a move to 12 teams.

For now, the field will remain at four, but it’s highly likely we’ll see another SEC team at the top when all is said and done.
