Kyle Petty Takes Shot At NASCAR Cup Series Drivers With Latest Comments About ‘Superstars’

Former NASCAR Cup Series driver Kyle Petty is most notable for being the son of Richard Petty, who is a legend of the sport.

But that hasn’t kept the younger Petty from sharing his opinions on anything and everything, even if nobody is particularly asking for it.

His latest comments took aim at the entire NASCAR Cup Series garage, which he claims currently lacks “superstars.”

“NASCAR or the teams have to figure that out, how to create superstars,” Petty said in an interview with Eric Estepp.

“We have a lot of phenomenal race car drivers in this sport…but we don’t have superstar race car drivers. We just don’t. And we’ve not had a superstar race car driver in a long time in this sport, the way I look at it.

“Somebody that transcends the sport and can go do other things away from the sport that brings eyes to the sport. I just don’t see that.”

Petty’s comments come the same day that former series champion Kyle Larson finished second on the first day of testing for the Indianapolis 500. Larson, who has never participated in an IndyCar event, is set to run this year’s edition of the legendary race.

So, what did NASCAR fans have to say about his comments?

Well, let’s just say they weren’t overly amused.

Petty is no stranger to stirring the pot. Last season, he landed in hot water for calling out both Bubba Wallace and Ryan Blaney.

Blaney then went on to win the NASCAR Cup Series championship just months later.

So it wouldn’t come as a surprise if Petty had to stick his foot in his mouth yet again. But it is surprising to see him go after the entirety of the NASCAR Cup Series garage. Especially when he still works for series broadcaster NBC.
