At this time last year, you wouldn’t have expected that Derek Carr had just one year left as the starting quarterback of the Las Vegas Raiders.

He was in the midst of one of the best seasons of his career with the team and was about to make his first playoff start for the team.

During the offseason, he signed a hefty contract extension with the team. Unfortunately, it seems the team has come to regret that after just one season.

The team is clearly ready to move on from Carr after replacing him with Jarrett Stidham for the last couple weeks of the season, but it hasn’t become clear yet how they will move forward at quarterback next season.

According to Outback’s Jason Cole, owner Mark Davis wants them to pursue Tom Brady.

Mark is embarrassed. He was pissed last year when the Chiefs and Bears brought so many fans to town. Now it’s happening every week. He wants it to stop. He wanted Brady before when Jon Gruden finally turned it down and now, he wants Brady again. Mark thinks having McDaniels is going to be the key.

But I’m hearing McDaniels is not so sure.

There isn’t much about Brady’s current season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that would make you believe that him signing on with the Raiders would suddenly make them a contender. The team would still have issues on defense and on their offensive line.

They’re also about to have to give Josh Jacobs a hefty contract if they want to keep him around beyond this season, which is going to make their cap situation difficult to navigate. They’ll also have a dead cap hit to deal with if they release Derek Carr.

There are also questions about how much of the team’s struggles should fall on the coaching staff. The Raiders’ propensity for blowing big leads this season certainly wasn’t all Carr’s fault.

However, Brady could be the team’s answer for a year or two as they wait for a rookie quarterback to develop if that is the path they choose to take with their first round pick.

For now, it looks like Davis and McDaniels will just have to to agree on what they need to do at quarterback before they start pursuing anybody.
