Since the dawn of the Nick Saban Era in the early-2000s and well before, the LSU Tigers have been known for their incredible defense.
From Tommy Casanova, to Marcus Spears, to Patrick Peterson and Tyrann Matheiu. One thing was always certain, when you play LSU, they’re going to hit you in the mouth.
But not the 2023 edition of the LSU Tigers.
Far from it.
Despite a heroic performance from Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jayden Daniels to lead the best offense in the country, the Tigers went just 10-3 due to a defense that couldn’t stop a soul.
The LSU defense finished 105th nationally in total defense (416.6 YPG) and allowed 28 points per game, which was tied for 78th in the FBS with Akron.
Head coach Brian Kelly fired defensive coordinator Matt House following the season, much to the delight of several current players.
And he didn’t wait long to find a replacement.
Blake Baumgartner of ESPN reports LSU has hired former Missouri defensive coordinator Blake Baker to fill the roll.
The Tigers will pay Baker $2.5 million a year to coordinate the defense. That number makes him the highest-paid assistant coach in college football history.
“Blake brings a wealth of experience and success as a defensive coordinator throughout his career, including the last two years in the SEC at Missouri,” Kelly said in a statement released by the school. “His ability to develop and motivate his players while putting together highly successful defenses sets him apart in his field.”
Bakers defense as Missouri finished fourth in the SEC in scoring defense (20.8 PPG). Its total defense (336.1 YPG) and rushing defense (122.8 YPG) were both fifth in the conference.
The 41-year-old cut his teeth under both Ed Orgeron and Manny Diaz. So it’s clear he knows what a good defense should look like.
At least that’s what LSU fans are hoping for.
