Patriots Super Bowl hero Malcolm Butler was arrested for DUI earlier this month in North Providence, RI according to reports from Boston 25 News.

The former NFL defender is best remembered for his goal line interception against Russell Wilson and the Seahawks, which sealed a 28-24 victory for New England.

Unfortunately, he finds himself in the headlines for the wrong reasons this week.

More from Boston 25 News:

Butler was charged with driving under the influence of liquor, refusing a chemical test, and stopping at a prohibited intersection.

According to a North Providence police report, Butler’s white Mercedes Benz E300 was parked in the westbound lane of Mineral Spring Avenue, blocking traffic just before 3:30 a.m.

Officers conducted a traffic stop where Butler allegedly informed them he was coming from a studio in Providence where he was making music. Police say there was a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, his speech was very slurred, and his eyes were severely bloodshot.

Butler knew he was in the wrong immediately, reportedly saying, “Just take me to jail,” when questioned by a police officer. He refused a sobriety test and was booked without incident.

Malcolm Butler is beloved in the Boston area, having spent four of his seven NFL seasons with the New England Patriots. The remainder of his tenure was played with the Tennessee Titans.

He recently called it quits on a career, officially retiring from football earlier this year. The defensive back received a standing ovation at TD Garden shortly thereafter.

Unfortunately, those celebrations are now in the back of his mind as he looks to move on following the arrest.
