The New York Mets’ television booth of play-by-play man Gary Cohen and analysts and former Mets World Series champion teammates Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling is often considered the best booth in baseball. Gary and Ron play it pretty straight, but Keith is always making out-of-pocket comments.

On Wednesday, the Mets were wrapping up their season-opening six-game road trip with a rubber match against the Miami Marlins. And, after the Marlins couldn’t score in the bottom of the 10th in a tie game with a runner on 3rd an 1 out, Keith Hernandez was caught on a hot mic blasting the Marlins.

The Mets, who haven’t played great baseball and came in to Wednesday’s game at 2-3, did not play well once again on Wednesday. The defense was terrible, and until a massive three-run, game-tying home run by Pete Alonso in the 8th inning, looked headed for a 2-4 start and an embarrassing series loss to the Marlins.

Neither team scored in the 9th, and the Mets let a golden opportunity of 1st and 3rd and no outs with the nine-hitter up in the top of the 10th slip away without scoring, giving the Marlins a huge advantage just needing to get the ghost runner in from 2nd base to win the game in the bottom of the 10th.

But, after a successful sacrifice bunt, the Marlins were unable to get the runner from third in. And, Keith Hernandez was unhappy about the hitting display from the Malrins, and maybe even the Mets.

The Mets would win the game in the 11th, 6-5, scoring their two runs on a bases-loaded walk and an error. But, Keith’s point remains. Neither of those two team executed like you’d like to see professional ballplayers execute.
