After eight seasons and one NBA Championship with the Los Angeles Lakers, LeBron James is officially a free agent for the first time since 2018.
The superstar and future Hall of Famer informed the Lakers on Tuesday that he intended to pursue other options and that the organization could move forward without him in its plans.
But what does that mean for the rest of the league?
Even at nearly 42 years old, James has shown that he still has the ability to play at an extremely high level and can be a game-changer in the playoffs. He’ll certainly have no shortage of options when it comes to his next destination.
7 Teams With The Best Chance To Sign LeBron James
While there’s no shortage of suitors for James, there is a long a list of teams you could almost immediately cross off the list.
With one, maybe two years left in his NBA career, James isn’t going to go somewhere that he feels he has no chance of competing for a championship.
To further that point, any team that lands James is likely going to have to have at least one established star to pair with him. While James still has the ability to turn up his level come the playoffs, he doesn’t have the fitness to carry a team throughout an 82-game season.
So, which teams actually have a shot at landing James in free agency? These seven stand out above the rest.
7) Philadelphia 76ers

Okay, hear us out for a second.
Yes, the Philadelphia 76ers just got swept out of the second round of the NBA playoffs, and they’re not getting any younger anytime soon.
But it’s not too hard to see a fit here. For one, James has been full of praise for Joel Embiid through the MVP center’s career, and the two played together for Team USA when they won gold at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Additionally, James’ agent, Rich Paul, is also the agent for Sixers superstar Tyrese Maxey. It also appears Philly has a burgeoning star in All-Rookie selection VJ Edgecombe.
The biggest thing holding this move back is Philadelphia’s cap situation. If the Sixers want to make a real run at James, it will involve somehow shedding the contract of Paul George, who has two years and $110 million left on his deal should he choose to opt in to the final year of the deal next summer.
6) Los Angeles Clippers

What if LeBron James wants to move on from the Lakers, but doesn’t want to actually move on from LA?
Could the Los Angeles Clippers, who are reportedly shopping superstar Kawhi Leonard, be an option? The Clippers missed the playoffs altogether last season, making them seem like an unappealing option.
But if they hold onto Leonard, at least for one more season, pairing him with James could be a recipe for success. And we already know that James and his family enjoy life in LA.
5) Dallas Mavericks

While they’re under new management, everybody knows the Dallas Mavericks have a lengthy history of taking big swings in free agency.
We already saw how quickly a rebuilding team can turn into a title contender last season with the San Antonio Spurs. Why couldn’t the Mavericks follow suit?
Reigning Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg looks like a burgeoning superstar, and we know James has maintained a good relationship with former star teammate Kyrie Irving, with whom he won a championship for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Could a core of Irving, who is coming back off ACL surgery, Flagg, and James lead Dallas to title contention in 2026-27?
4) San Antonio Spurs

What if James decides he wants to go to a young team that’s on the rise, but he doesn’t want to have the uncertainty of the Dallas Mavericks?
Perhaps a team like the aforementioned San Antonio Spurs?
San Antonio was a handful of bad fourth quarters away from winning a championship this season on the back of superstar Victor Wembanyama. Rookie Dylan Harper and second-year guard Stephon Castle look like burgeoning stars in their own right, and role players such as Julian Champagnie help fill out a deep roster.
What better way for James to pass the torch to Wembanyama than to win a championship in San Antonio on the way out?
3) Cleveland Cavaliers

Now we’re getting into the real contenders.
The Cleveland Cavaliers reached the Eastern Conference Finals in 2026, where they were promptly swept by the New York Knicks.
It’s clear Cleveland is one step away from being a genuine NBA Championship contender, and what better step to take than bringing LeBron James home for one final run.
Perhaps this is just wishful thinking for the sake of nostalgia, but NBA reporter Chris Haynes claims that Cleveland is genuinely interested in bringing James in to end his career with his hometown team, and we’d love to see it.
2) Miami Heat

While the Cleveland Cavaliers are James’ hometown franchise and the place he began his NBA career before returning and bringing them an NBA title, there’s a whole generation of basketball fans who associate James with the Miami Heat and his run alongside Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh as the “Big Three.”
Miami just made a blockbuster deal to land superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. Why not go out and make another splash, creating a new “Big Three” of Giannis, LeBron, and Bam Adebayo?
Perhaps that would leave the Heat too stretched financially to fill out a roster deep enough to contend. But come on, you can’t tell us you wouldn’t want to see what it would look like?
1) Golden State Warriors

The Golden State Warriors have been linked to LeBron James since before he even announced his intent to hit free agency. They’re currently the betting favorite to land James, and ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reports that the Warriors were trying to get a deal done as soon as Tuesday afternoon.
While that sounds unlikely, it’s clear that the franchise has made James its No. 1 priority, and James sounds receptive.
Would a core of James, Steph Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green actually be able to contend for a championship at this stage in their careers? It seems unlikely. But you can’t say it wouldn’t be fun to watch the two players who defined the last generation of the NBA – James and Curry – playing for the same team to end their respective careers.
