The West Virginia Mountaineers won the Duke’s Mayo Bowl on Wednesday night, blowing out North Carolina in Charlotte. Head coach Neal Brown landed a mayo bath as a result.

Despite the Tar Heel State locale, it was WVU who took over the city.

Bank of America Stadium was all blue and gold by the time kickoff rolled around, and those Mountaineers were loud and proud until the clock struck 0:00.

Renditions of “Sweet Caroline” could be heard throughout the Queen City as West Virginia rolled from start to finish.

There was a lot to cheer for watching the Mountaineers on the field.

After jumping out to a 7-0 lead on the first play from scrimmage, they wouldn’t look back. West Virginia used a big second half to extend its advantage, keeping the Tar Heels off the scoreboard over the final 30 minutes.

WVU scored the game’s last 16 points to leave with a convincing 30-10 bowl win.

Shortly thereafter, Neal Brown received his reward.

Brown was doused in mayonnaise, continuing a tradition that fans have grown to love.

What makes his situation most interesting is his disdain for mayonnaise, and condiments in general. Before the game, Brown was asked his thoughts on a potential mayo bath.

“I’m not a mayonnaise person,” he responded. “I’m not a condiment person at all.”

There was a lot of leadup to the mayo dump. Heck, Duke’s even put on a “Mayo Combine” to determine who would have the honor of drenching the winning coach in 4.5 gallons of the condiment.

Fans later took part in the festivities, ripping shots of straight mayonnaise in the stands.

The mayo bath puts an exclamation point on West Virginia’s season as the Mountaineers finish 9-4. They’ll hope to capitalize on the momentum this offseason and turn it into future success in 2024.
